Samsung Electronics posted a record second-quarter operating profit as booming demand for artificial intelligence (AI) memory chips more than offset weaker earnings from its mobile business.
The South Korean technology giant reported operating profit of 89.5 trillion won (US$61.98 billion) for the April to June quarter, up from 4.68 trillion won a year earlier and broadly in line with its earlier estimate of 89.4 trillion won, Reuters reported.
Revenue more than doubled, rising 130% year-on-year to 171.5 trillion won.
Samsung said strong demand for AI memory chips is expected to continue through the second half of 2026 despite softer demand from the smartphone and personal computer markets.
“In H2 2026, the Memory Business expects robust demand centred on servers stemming from continued AI infrastructure capex and broader adoption of agentic AI,” Samsung said in a statement.
“This is projected to keep the market undersupplied, despite partial demand moderation in mobile and PCs.”
The world’s largest memory chipmaker has benefited from sustained investment in AI infrastructure, with demand for high-performance memory chips remaining strong as companies expand data centre capacity and deploy more advanced AI applications.
