The hosting of Formula 1 (F1) at Sepang is expected to support Malaysia’s economic growth, particularly through the tourism sector, said Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir.
He said international events such as F1 could attract foreign visitors and create wider economic spillovers through tourism-related spending.
Akmal Nasrullah added that the benefits from major events should extend beyond specific sectors, with small traders and local businesses also able to benefit from increased economic activity.
The Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix will take place at the Sepang International Circuit from Oct 2 to 4. The event is being organised through a collaboration between F1, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), and the governments of Malaysia and Bahrain.
On the broader economic outlook, Akmal Nasrullah said Malaysia’s economy is expected to remain resilient in the second half of 2026, supported by government measures and strong economic fundamentals.
He said the economy grew 5.6% in the first half of the year, while Bank Negara Malaysia’s full-year growth projection remains between 4.0% and 5.0%.
The minister said the government is also taking steps to maintain stable oil supplies until the end of the year to support economic momentum. However, Malaysia remains cautious over global uncertainties, including geopolitical tensions in West Asia that could affect oil supplies.
