After the critical and commercial success of the horror film, “Obsession”, eyes are now on breakout star Inde Navarette and what she plans to do next.
“I’ve been taking a lot of meetings since ‘Obsession’ came out,” she explained on Variety’s “Up Next” podcast. “That’s been really nice because you get to meet people and ask questions.”
One of those meetings, as one might expect for one of Hollywood’s rising stars, was with Marvel Studios. Navarrette revealed she recently met with “Thunderbolts” director Jake Schreier, who is now developing Marvel’s upcoming “X-Men” film. She said she grew up watching Fox’s original 2000s “X-Men” movies and praised Schreier for bringing back the character-driven storytelling that she loved about that era of Marvel.
“I thought what Jake brought to ‘Thunderbolts’ was what I used to love about Marvel,” Navarrette said. “It was character-driven, and the whole time I just couldn’t stop yapping about how much I appreciated what he did with Marvel.”
Marvel aside, she shared that she met with other filmmakers that she admired, whether it led to an opportunity or mere networking.
“That’s kind of the luxury I have right now, meeting all these different kinds of people,” she said. “Not all of those meetings turn into projects, but sometimes it’s just, ‘I really want to work with you. I’ve seen this project, and this one, and this one.’”
Several of the legacy “X-Men” actors, including Patrick Stewart’s Professor Xavier, Ian McKellen’s Magneto, James Marsden’s Cyclops, Kelsey Grammer’s Beast, Alan Cumming’s Nightcrawler and Rebecca Romijn’s shape-shifter Mystique will appear in “Avengers: Doomsday” this December.
Following “Avengers: Secret Wars” in 2027, which will likely bring back even more legacy Marvel performers, Kevin Feige’s Marvel universe will start anew with a younger group of X-Men in Schreier’s upcoming film. Presumably, Sadie Sink’s Jean Grey (just introduced in Marvel and Sony’s “Spider-Man: Brand New Day”) will be one of the leading stars of the film.
As for which X-Men character Navarette hopes to play, she teases: “I mean, Mystique has always been super cool.”
