Malaysia, Vietnam Look To Build On Defence MoU

Malaysia and Vietnam are looking to further strengthen their defence relationship following the renewal of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on defence cooperation in December 2023, Defence Minister Dato’ Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said.

In a Facebook post marking his arrival in Hanoi for a two-day official visit, Mohamed Khaled said the renewed MoU reflected both countries’ commitment to continuing to strengthen their bilateral defence ties.

“Malaysia and Vietnam have indeed enjoyed close defence relations. The renewal of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on defence cooperation in December 2023 reflects the commitment of both countries to continue strengthening bilateral relations,” he said.

Mohamed Khaled is on his first official visit to Vietnam as Defence Minister and is scheduled to meet Vietnamese Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng as well as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence General Phan Văn Giang.

He said the visit was expected to bring Malaysia-Vietnam defence relations to a higher level while opening up more opportunities for cooperation that would benefit both countries.

The minister also said stronger defence cooperation between the two countries could contribute to regional peace and stability.
