KLCI Nudges Higher As Bursa Opens Cautiously

Bursa Malaysia opened mixed on Friday, with the benchmark FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) edging higher while broader market sentiment remained cautious.

As at 9.17am, the FBM KLCI rose 0.12 points, or 0.01 per cent, to 1,737.27. The index had opened at 1,733.64 and climbed as high as 1,739.14 during early trading.

Market breadth remained negative, with 79 gainers against 122 decliners, suggesting that the modest advance in the benchmark index was not broadly reflected across the market.

Among the other key indices, the FBM70 fell 30.78 points, or 0.17 per cent, to 18,295.28 while the FTSE4Good Bursa Malaysia Index (F4GBM) slipped 0.23 points, or 0.02 per cent, to 1,043.24.

The FBMEMAS eased 0.78 points, or 0.01 per cent, to 12,855.24 while the FBMSHA gained 8.50 points, or 0.07 per cent, to 12,700.04.

Trading activity was led by PTRANS, which rose 2.5 sen to 20 sen with 202.3 million shares changing hands.

MRCB was the second most actively traded counter, falling 0.5 sen to 33.5 sen on 132.2 million shares, followed by HAWK which gained 0.5 sen to 14.5 sen with 93.9 million shares traded.

TWL fell 0.5 sen to two sen after recording 84.2 million shares in volume, while NATGATE was unchanged at RM1.39 with 71.1 million shares traded.

Among the top gainers, TONGHER surged 49 sen to RM2.39, followed by YTL Power International Bhd which added 16 sen to RM4.53.

Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd rose 14 sen to RM15.08, while Tenaga Nasional Bhd also gained 14 sen to RM14.62. Heineken Malaysia Bhd climbed 12 sen to RM17.22.

On the losing side, United Plantations Bhd fell 44 sen to RM33.76, while Malaysian Pacific Industries Bhd declined 34 sen to RM47.32.

PentaMaster Corp Bhd was among the more actively traded decliners, falling 25 sen to RM5.46 on 34.7 million shares.

Kuala Lumpur Kepong Bhd shed 22 sen to RM21.38 while Petronas Dagangan Bhd declined 16 sen to RM19.40.

The early session saw 96.59 million shares worth RM408.32 million traded.
