The Democratic Action Party (DAP) has overwhelmingly voted for its Cabinet ministers and deputy ministers to remain in Malaysia’s unity government, giving Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim a reprieve as the coalition’s largest ally reaffirms its support for the administration.
At its congress on Sunday, DAP delegates voted 88.2% in favour of keeping the party’s representatives in government until the next general election.
Of the 2,106 secret ballots cast, 1,857 delegates voted for the ministers to remain in their positions, while 242 voted for them to quit. Seven ballots were spoilt.
The vote effectively gives DAP’s five full ministers and seven deputy ministers a mandate to continue serving in the unity government.
A total of 4,264 delegates were eligible to vote, with 2,223 attending the congress.
DAP’s decision to hold the internal vote followed a series of electoral setbacks, particularly its performance in the November 2025 Sabah state election, where the party lost all eight seats it contested.
The congress had initially been scheduled for July 12 but was postponed due to the Johor and Negeri Sembilan state elections.
DAP subsequently saw its representation decline in both states, with its seats in Johor falling from 10 to six and in Negeri Sembilan from 11 to nine.
The electoral results had raised questions over the party’s position in the unity government and whether its continued participation should be reassessed.
Sunday’s vote, however, provides Anwar with greater political stability as DAP opts to remain in the administration despite its recent electoral disappointments.
