BlaBlaCar has launched its intercity carpooling platform in Malaysia, marking the French mobility company’s first Southeast Asian market as it looks to offer motorists a way to share travel costs amid rising fuel pressures.
The platform, which has 30 million annual active members globally, connects drivers with spare seats on planned intercity journeys to passengers travelling along the same route. BlaBlaCar said the service is now available across Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam as part of its expansion to 41 countries.
The company said Malaysia’s high reliance on private vehicles makes carpooling particularly relevant, with 909 vehicles for every 1,000 people compared with an Asia-Pacific average of 317.
Drivers can offset more than half of their fuel and toll costs by sharing expenses, based on BlaBlaCar’s average of 2.1 passengers per trip. Its pricing tool calculates passenger contributions based on local fuel prices and route distance, with fees capped at cost recovery rather than profit.
The launch comes as unsubsidised RON95 prices have risen nearly 36% since early March to RM3.62 per litre by late July, although eligible Malaysians continue to receive subsidised RON95 at RM1.99 under BUDI95.
BlaBlaCar said Malaysia recorded 290.1 million domestic visitor trips in 2025, with nearly 260 million made by private vehicle, highlighting the potential for shared mobility.
The platform allows drivers to post trips through its app or website while passengers can search for matching routes and book seats. It also includes verified profiles, ratings and reviews, alongside customer service and content moderation.
