Tan Sri Dr Ismail To Retire As Bank Islam Chairman

Bank Islam Malaysia Bhd chairman Tan Sri Dr Ismail Hj Bakar will retire from his position as an independent non-executive chairman effective Aug 22, 2026.

Ismail, 66, is retiring from the board after serving as chairman of the Islamic banking group.

Ismail holds a Bachelor of Economics (Applied Economics) with Honours from Universiti Malaya, a Diploma in Public Administration from the National Institute of Public Administration (INTAN), a Master of Business Administration and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Hull in the United Kingdom.

He also completed an executive programme at INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France.

Beyond Bank Islam, Ismail currently holds several senior corporate and institutional positions.

These include chairman of Johor Plantations Group Berhad, chairman of KPJ Healthcare Berhad and chairman of the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission.

He is also deputy chairman of Johor Corporation and serves as a director of several private companies, including Grand Sahara (Pahang) Sdn Bhd, TSI Security Services Sdn Bhd, Anjung Cahaya Automobil Sdn Bhd, Great Food Sdn Bhd and Telus Prospek Sdn Bhd.
