Singapore Stocks Snap 10-Week Winning Streak As STI Slips 0.95%

Singapore equities took a breather in the week ended Aug 21, with the Straits Times Index (STI) retreating 54.62 points, or 0.95%, to 5,688.96 as a sharp mid-week selloff erased Monday’s gains.

The decline snapped the STI’s 10-week winning streak, although the benchmark remained firmly in positive territory for 2026, up 22.44% year to date on a total-return basis.

The week began on a positive note before three consecutive sessions of losses, with Friday’s modest rebound offering only partial relief.

Monday: Keppel Leads Opening Rally

The STI rose 24.87 points, or 0.43%, to 5,768.46 on Aug 17 after recovering from a weaker opening.

Keppel led the blue-chip gainers, climbing 3% to S$11.51, while Wilmar International was the weakest STI constituent, falling 2.1% to S$3.67.

The early-week rebound, however, proved short-lived as investors turned more cautious amid growing external market risks.

Tuesday: STI Takes Its Biggest Hit

The mood changed sharply on Aug 18, with the STI plunging 67.06 points, or 1.16%, to 5,701.40, marking the biggest daily decline of the week.

The selloff came against a broader technology-led risk-off backdrop, with higher bond yields weighing on global technology stocks. The Nasdaq Composite had fallen 1.33%, adding pressure to regional markets.

Wednesday: Losses Continue, But More Orderly

The STI edged another 7.16 points, or 0.13%, lower to 5,694.24 on Aug 19.

Unlike Tuesday’s sharper selloff, the decline was more measured, with selected counters managing to buck the broader weakness. UOL Group led the STI gainers as investors continued to pick through individual stocks despite the softer benchmark.

Thursday: Third Straight Drop

The selling extended into Aug 20, with the STI falling 22.33 points, or 0.39%, to 5,671.91.

CapitaLand Investment led STI performers, while Thai Beverage and Frasers Centrepoint Trust also recorded gains. However, strength in selected counters was insufficient to prevent the benchmark from registering its third consecutive decline.

Friday: City Developments Leads Modest Rebound

The STI finally returned to positive territory on Aug 21, gaining 17.05 points, or 0.30%, to 5,688.96.

City Developments led gains among the blue chips, helping the index claw back some of the week’s losses.

The broader market also showed pockets of strength, with the FTSE ST All-Share Index rising 0.25% and the FTSE ST Mid Cap Index gaining 0.36%. The FTSE ST Catalist Index performed even better, climbing 2.31%, although the FTSE ST Small Cap Index fell 0.68%.

What Drove The Pullback?

The weekly retreat reflected a combination of external pressures rather than a broad-based breakdown in Singapore equities.

Technology stocks came under pressure as global bond yields rose, while volatile oil prices and renewed concerns surrounding Middle East developments added to investor caution.

With the STI coming off a prolonged run of record highs and weekly gains, the pullback appeared more like a correction from elevated levels than a decisive reversal of its broader 2026 uptrend.

Still, the 10-week winning streak is now over, giving investors a reminder that even a market running at record levels remains vulnerable to global risk-off swings.

The STI ended the week at 5,688.96, still up 22.44% for the year, but with its record-setting run finally showing signs of taking a breather.
