Tokyo Shakes After 5.9 Magnitude Earthquake Struck Ibaraki Prefecture

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.9 struck Ibaraki Prefecture, northeast of Tokyo, the Japan Meteorological Agency said Sunday.

The shaking was strongly felt in the Japanese capital.

The temblor occurred at around 2 a.m. local time (1700 GMT) at a depth of about 70 km, measuring lower 5 on Japan’s seismic intensity scale of 7 in parts of Ibaraki, Saitama and Chiba prefectures as well as Tokyo’s Adachi Ward, the weather agency said.

The quake’s epicenter was located at a latitude of 36 degrees north and a longitude of 140.1 degrees east.

No tsunami warning was issued.
