Hang Seng Edges Up 0.07% As Tencent, Materials Stocks Lift Market

Hong Kong stocks eked out a modest gain on Aug 28, with the Hang Seng Index rising 19.05 points, or 0.07%, to 25,584.79, supported by gains in Tencent, materials and selected technology counters.

Tencent rose 1.65% to HK$455.20, providing support to the benchmark, while Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing gained 0.43% to HK$424.

BYD Electronic was among the session’s strongest blue-chip performers, jumping 6.27% to HK$24.76, while Aluminum Corporation of China advanced 3.61% to HK$8.765. Materials, media and information technology stocks were among the market’s better-performing sectors.

Oil counters also strengthened, with PetroChina rising 2.21% to HK$10.19, Sinopec gaining 1.82% to HK$4.76 and CNOOC advancing 1.27% to HK$25.44.

The gains were capped by weakness elsewhere. Techtronic Industries fell 2.52%, while Orient Overseas International sank 8.65%. Alibaba declined 1.39%, contributing to a 0.33% fall in the Hang Seng Tech Index to 4,605.15.

Turnover on Hong Kong’s main board stood at HK$231.21 billion. Despite the slight advance on Aug 28, the Hang Seng Index ended the week 1.63% lower.
