Matthew Perry spent a decade making audiences laugh as Chandler Bing. Now, a new documentary series will look at the man behind the character, including the struggles he rarely kept out of the public eye.
The One About Matthew Perry premieres on Oct. 27 on Netflix and will tell the actor’s story through interviews with people who knew him personally and professionally.
Perry became a household name as Chandler Bing on Friends. The sitcom ran from 1994 to 2004, with Perry appearing in all 236 episodes. His performance made Chandler one of the show’s most recognisable characters.
Away from the sitcom, Perry spoke openly about his addiction and recovery. He also wrote about those experiences in his 2022 memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing.
Perry died in October 2023 at the age of 54. His death was ruled accidental, with the acute effects of ketamine listed as the cause.
Directed by Emmy winner Mary Robertson, the three-part documentary will explore parts of Perry’s life that were less familiar to the public. His sister, Mia Perry Bowick, and his longtime friends will share personal accounts. The series will also include previously unreleased photographs and videos from the Perry family’s private archive.
The people featured in the series will discuss Perry beyond his role as Chandler and his public battle with addiction. The aim is to give a broader account of his life and career.
