I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali has cancelled and rescheduled several flights following increased volcanic activity at Mount Anak Krakatau, according to the Antara news agency.
As of 10 am Sunday local time, five flights from Jakarta to Bali had been cancelled, affecting services operated by TransNusa and Indonesia AirAsia.
The cancellations came as Anak Krakatau continued to erupt following increased volcanic activity late on Sept 4. The eruption has been accompanied by roaring sounds, vibrations and lava fountains, while satellite data showed volcanic ash rising to about 14.6 kilometres above sea level.
In response, airport authorities are coordinating with airlines and AirNav Indonesia, which is monitoring airspace affected by the volcanic activity. Airport Communication and Legal Division head Gede Eka Sandi Asmadi said the increased activity had prompted the cancellations and flight schedule adjustments.
Despite the disruption, the airport continues to operate normally. Additional seating and services have also been provided at the terminal for passengers affected by cancellations and delays.
Travellers have been advised to check their flight status with their respective airlines before heading to the airport.
Mount Anak Krakatau is located in the Sunda Strait between the Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra.
