Godzilla is back. The first trailer for Godzilla Minus Zero picks up two years after the events of Godzilla Minus One, as Japan’s postwar recovery is interrupted by another appearance from the kaiju.
The trailer opens with a warning: “We didn’t finish the job as we thought.” It then cuts to 1949, with Japan still rebuilding after the war and the destruction caused by Godzilla.
The new film follows Kōichi Shikishima, played again by Ryunosuke Kamiki. Minami Hamabe also returns as Noriko, alongside Yuki Yamada, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Sakura Ando and Miou Tanaka.
The trailer suggests Godzilla may have survived the events of the first film. A fragment of the creature appears to regenerate as it sinks into the ocean, setting up its return.
Masami Nagasawa joins the cast as Ms Aoyama, a weather forecasting expert who becomes involved as the new threat emerges.
Deadline reported that director Takashi Yamazaki is returning to write, direct and oversee the visual effects. Godzilla Minus One won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects in 2024 and earned US$113.9 million worldwide.
Godzilla Minus Zero will also be the first Japanese production filmed for IMAX. The film is scheduled to premiere at the New York Film Festival on Sept. 26 before its November release in Japan and North America.
The North American theatrical release is set for Nov. 6.
