Hong Kong Stocks Fall 148.84 Points As Rate-Hike Jitters Weigh

Hong Kong stocks closed lower on Sept 11 as expectations of another US interest-rate hike and subdued trading appetite weighed on sentiment.

The Hang Seng Index fell 148.84 points, or 0.6%, to 24,805.63, bringing its loss for the week to about 3.3%. Market turnover stood at HK$228.43 billion.

The Hang Seng Tech Index slipped 0.23% to 4,320.57, while the Hang Seng China Enterprises Index declined 0.3% to 8,246.

Risk appetite remained under pressure as hotter US inflation data strengthened expectations that the Federal Reserve could raise interest rates at its upcoming policy meeting, while elevated oil prices continued to fuel concerns over inflation and borrowing costs.

Among blue chips, Orient Overseas International, Galaxy Entertainment and Shenzhou International were among the stronger performers. CMOC, Sun Hung Kai Properties and Zijin Mining led declines. Zijin Mining dropped about 6.7% to HK$34.82.

Mainland Chinese equities also weakened, with the Shanghai Composite falling 1.18% to 3,888, adding to the cautious regional mood.
