Tan Chong Motor Holdings Bhd’s indirect wholly owned subsidiary has signed a memorandum of understanding with China-based Saike REPT Power Battery System Co Ltd to explore the localisation of electric vehicle battery packs and other components in Malaysia.
Under the MOU signed on Sept 17, the parties will conduct feasibility studies and jointly evaluate a potential collaboration covering the localisation of battery packs and selected EV components, including those used in TQ Wuling electric vehicles.
The proposed collaboration will also assess opportunities to supply locally produced components to other countries, as well as the responsible handling, recycling and second-life utilisation of used EV battery packs.
The MOU will remain in force for 12 months from Sept 17, 2026, unless extended or terminated earlier by mutual agreement.
