More than eight million domestic electricity users will be covered by the Government’s expanded electricity bill protection after the monthly threshold was raised from 600 kilowatt-hours (kWh) to 800kWh.
Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) said users consuming 800kWh or less a month will be exempted from the Automatic Fuel Adjustment (AFA), eight per cent Sales and Service Tax (SST) and the RM10 retail charge.
The expanded protection applies to electricity consumption from September until Dec 31, with the savings from September consumption reflected as a credit in October bills.
TNB said the revised threshold would cover up to 90 per cent of its domestic users, including nearly one million additional users compared with the previous threshold.
The utility estimates it will absorb between RM120 million and RM150 million in AFA and retail charges during the additional protection period.
The measure comes amid concerns over higher household electricity bills linked to increased electricity consumption and changes in fuel costs.
TNB also advised consumers to continue monitoring their electricity usage and practise energy efficiency, particularly amid the current hot weather and haze.
