Domestic consumers covered by the Government’s expanded 800 kilowatt-hour (kWh) electricity bill protection will see the impact in their October bills, Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) president and chief executive officer Datuk Ir Ts Shamsul Ahmad said.
Clarifying the implementation during a question-and-answer session with the media following a briefing today, Shamsul said the measure is based on electricity consumption from Sept 1.
“The effective consumption is from Sept 1, the impact is on the October bill. You will see quite a reduction on the October bill,” he said.
The clarification comes a day after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that the Government had expanded electricity bill protection for domestic users from 600kWh to 800kWh a month, effective for electricity consumption from September until Dec 31.
Under the measure, domestic users consuming up to 800kWh a month will be protected from the Automatic Fuel Adjustment (AFA), retail charges and the eight per cent Sales and Service Tax (SST).
The move followed a special meeting chaired by Anwar on Sept 17 involving the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), the Energy Commission, TNB and the Ministry of Finance to discuss measures to mitigate the impact of higher electricity bills on affected households.
Anwar had earlier said hotter weather and haze had caused some households to exceed the previous 600kWh threshold, resulting in higher bills as they became subject to the AFA.
TNB said the AFA rate for September was set at 3.67 sen per kWh, while domestic consumers using 600kWh or less were previously exempt from the AFA, retail charge and SST.
