The Vietnamese government has issued a plan to connect its national electronic identification application, VNeID, with electronic identification systems in Singapore and Laos before gradually extending the connection to other Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries, the government portal reported Tuesday.
The plan aims to simplify immigration procedures and shorten inspection, verification, and processing times at border gates while enhancing people-to-people exchanges and promoting regional trade and investment, the report said.
Under the plan, Vietnam will pilot the connection, authentication, and exchange of electronic identification information with Singapore and Laos at Noi Bai International Airport in the capital, Hanoi, and Tan Son Nhat International Airport in the southern hub of Ho Chi Minh City.
The pilot program will begin in 2026 and continue in subsequent years. Authorities will assess processing times, authentication success rates, errors, and user feedback before considering expansion to other border gates and ASEAN countries
