MCMC Refers WhatsApp Account Complaints To Meta

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is looking into public complaints involving WhatsApp accounts that have reportedly been compromised, blocked or made inaccessible.

MCMC said it has referred the cases to Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company, seeking clarification and appropriate action.

“MCMC will continue to monitor the situation and seek cooperation from the platform to protect user interests,” the commission said in a statement on Friday.

It also advised affected users to use WhatsApp’s official channels for account recovery or verification.

MCMC stressed that compromised accounts and accounts blocked by the platform are two separate issues.

“Accounts compromised by irresponsible parties can be misused for fraud, spam, or activities that violate WhatsApp’s terms, subsequently leading to the account being blocked by the platform,” it said.

The commission urged users not to share verification codes or security PINs, activate WhatsApp’s Two-Step Verification feature and avoid suspicious links or applications.

It also warned against third parties offering account recovery services in exchange for money, personal information or verification codes.

“If the issue cannot be resolved through official WhatsApp channels, users may submit a complaint to MCMC for further action and for the case to be referred to Meta,” the commission added.
