Taylor Swift has added four tracks to The Life of a Showgirl, with The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore arriving Friday, Sept. 25.
The deluxe edition includes “Patient Zero,” “Cleveland!,” “Pink Clouding” and “Babylon.” The songs touch on relationships, public criticism and the difficulty of recognising what matters until it is gone.
Billboard examined the references and possible meanings behind the four tracks, drawing from Swift’s comments, the lyrics and fan theories.
“Patient Zero” is the only song Swift has directly explained. She said the idea came from a conversation with friends after one woman contacted another about a shared ex. The song follows two women who have dated the same man, with one warning the other about his behaviour.
Some fans have connected the track to Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas. Swift dated Jonas as a teenager and later spent time with Turner following her split from Jonas. Swift has not confirmed that the song is about either of them.
“Cleveland!” is more direct. The title references Travis Kelce’s hometown, while the lyrics mention The Heights, where he grew up, and New Heights, the podcast he hosts with his brother, Jason. The song also addresses criticism Swift has faced over her appearance, personality and dancing, framing those complaints around her relationship with Kelce.
“Pink Clouding” uses a term associated with the early optimism of addiction recovery. Swift applies it to the rush of entering a new relationship after leaving another. The song also references “grey rocking,” a strategy of becoming emotionally distant from a partner.
Fans have linked those themes to “Getaway Car” from Reputation, which has long been associated with Swift’s brief relationship with Tom Hiddleston. That connection has not been confirmed by Swift.
“Babylon” takes a more narrative approach, following a character who looks back on parts of his life after losing them. The song uses the ancient city of Babylon as a metaphor for periods that seemed significant only after they had ended.
The four songs give The Encore a mix of personal references, relationship themes and fictional storytelling, while leaving some of their intended subjects open to interpretation.
