Huawei has taken another swing at redefining the smartphone form factor with the Mate XT 2 | ULTIMATE DESIGN, a tri-fold handset that unfolds into a 10.2-inch display while debuting a new approach to chip architecture.
Released on Sept 7, the Mate XT 2 is the first smartphone to run HarmonyOS 7 and the first commercial device to use Huawei’s LogicFolding Tau (τ) chip, the Kirin 9050 Pro.
The headline feature is the tri-fold design.
Folded, the Mate XT 2 functions like a conventional smartphone with a 6.5-inch cover screen. Fully opened, it expands into a 10.2-inch display and measures just 3.5mm thick.
That design places heavy demands on the display and hinge, both of which must withstand repeated folding without compromising usability.
Huawei has also added a Smart Shield Privacy Screen, allowing the viewing angle to narrow when Privacy Mode is activated while maintaining the same resolution.
The bigger technical shift is inside the phone.
The Kirin 9050 Pro uses 3D integration, stacking components vertically rather than relying entirely on shrinking transistor sizes.
Huawei calls the approach LogicFolding and argues that reducing the distance data has to travel between components can improve performance and energy efficiency.
The company says transistor density has increased from about 155 million to 238 million transistors per square millimetre.
The development comes as conventional semiconductor scaling becomes more difficult and expensive, prompting chipmakers to explore alternatives to simply making transistors smaller.
The Mate XT 2 is also the first handset to ship with HarmonyOS 7.
Huawei claims the new device delivers 42% more performance than the previous generation, although independent benchmark comparisons were not provided in the launch material.
Its display also receives a higher screen-to-body ratio and improved anti-reflection performance.
Huawei has also added ECG analysis directly to the handset.
When the phone is unfolded, users can hold both side frames for 30 seconds to capture an ECG signal. The accompanying software can analyse patterns associated with sinus rhythm, atrial fibrillation and premature beats.
The Mate XT 2 starts at RMB19,999 and went on sale on Sept 12.
