Stock Today: Maybank Falls 1.2% After RM1.56 Billion AT1 Sukuk Redemption

Maybank shares fell 12 sen or 1.18% to RM10.04 at 3.35pm, with the banking counter trading below its previous close amid broader caution in the financial sector.

The stock opened at RM10.16 and rose to an intraday high of RM10.20 before easing to a low of RM10.02. Some 7.9 million shares changed hands based on the reported volume of 79,022 (’00).

The counter’s previous close was RM10.16, while the current best bid stood at RM10.02 for 642,000 shares and the best offer at RM10.04 for 494,700 shares.

The share price movement comes after Maybank fully redeemed its RM1.56 billion Additional Tier 1 (AT1) Sukuk Mudharabah on Sept 25, its first call date seven years after the securities were issued.

The sukuk was originally issued on Sept 25, 2019 and formed part of Maybank’s AT1 capital instruments.

Meanwhile, Bank Negara Malaysia Governor Datuk Seri Abdul Rasheed Ghaffour said the central bank was reviewing whether financial institutions could be given greater flexibility to take on higher risks within acceptable limits to support Malaysia’s energy transition.

The move could have implications for how banks assess and finance green energy projects, particularly those that are technically feasible but not yet commercially viable.

At the time of writing, Maybank remained 1.18% lower for the session.
