Sunway University has retained its position as Malaysia’s and ASEAN’s No 1 non-government-linked private university, while breaking into the world’s top 300 after climbing to 283rd in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027.
The university improved from the previous 301-350 band, marking another step up in its global standing as it strengthened its performance in research, international engagement and academic excellence.
Sunway also ranked No 1 in Malaysia for International Outlook and Research Quality, underpinned by its international research collaborations, diverse student community and academic environment.
President and Vice-Chancellor Prof Sibrandes Poppema said the university’s research quality is now ranked 101st globally, while its International Outlook stands at 11th worldwide.
He attributed the progress to stronger research quality, a growing international student population and a high proportion of internationally co-authored publications.
The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027 assessed more than 2,000 research-intensive universities across 118 countries and territories, covering teaching, research environment, research quality, industry engagement and international outlook.
