MUFG Bank Ltd has commenced Islamic banking operations from its Labuan Branch after securing approval from the Labuan Financial Services Authority to operate an Islamic Banking Window.
The new window allows MUFG’s Labuan Branch to offer Shariah-compliant financing and investment solutions alongside its conventional banking services, expanding the group’s ability to serve clients across Malaysia and international markets.
The move strengthens MUFG’s Islamic finance capabilities in Malaysia while supporting cross-border business and investment flows across ASEAN, Japan and Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
MUFG Malaysia Chief Executive Officer and country head Motohide Okuda said the expanded platform would help meet growing demand from Japanese, Malaysian and international corporates for Shariah-compliant financing.
He said the platform could also support investment in Malaysia’s strategic growth sectors, including energy transition, digital infrastructure and semiconductors, while reinforcing the country’s position as an Islamic finance hub.
MUFG established its first Islamic banking platform in Kuala Lumpur in 2008 and has since expanded its capabilities into Islamic capital markets, including sukuk mandates for the sovereigns of Indonesia and the Philippines.
Its Labuan Branch, established in 1992, has long provided cross-border financial services across Asia. The new Islamic Banking Window complements MUFG’s existing Kuala Lumpur operations and broadens its capacity to deliver Shariah-compliant solutions across regional and global markets.
