TNB To Credit Sept Electricity Relief In October Bill For Households Using 601-800kWh

Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) said households consuming between 601kWh and 800kWh a month will receive credits in their October electricity bills, following the government’s decision to expand the electricity bill protection threshold from 600kWh to 800kWh.

The expanded protection, announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on Sept 17, applies to domestic electricity consumption from September until Dec 31, 2026. The measure was introduced after hotter weather and haze contributed to higher household electricity consumption, pushing some users above the previous 600kWh threshold and resulting in unusually higher bills.

Under the revised threshold, domestic customers consuming 800kWh or less per month will be fully exempted from three charges: the Automatic Fuel Adjustment (AFA), RM10 retail charge and 8% service tax.

TNB said eligible adjustments relating to September consumption will be calculated on a pro-rata basis and automatically credited to customers’ October bills, meaning consumers do not need to submit a separate application.

The credits will appear under the descriptions “PELARASAN BIL (SEP 2026)” and “PELARASAN CUKAI PERKHIDMATAN (8%) (SEP 2026)” on the bill.

Households whose actual September consumption was between 601kWh and 800kWh will receive adjustments covering the AFA, retail charge and 8% service tax.

Those consuming 600kWh or below will not receive an additional adjustment in October, as they were already within the previous protection threshold.

For households consuming 801kWh or more, TNB said the October reconciliation for September usage will provide an adjustment for the 8% service tax, according to its eligibility schedule.

The wider 800kWh protection effectively gives households an additional 200kWh of monthly consumption headroom before the full exemptions cease to apply through the end of December. TNB has separately confirmed that the higher threshold covers consumption from Sept 1 to Dec 31.

TNB also encouraged consumers concerned about rising electricity bills to monitor their daily usage through the myTNB application, particularly households equipped with smart meters.

It suggested keeping daily consumption below 25kWh and setting an Energy Budget of below RM328 through myTNB.

Consumers can also reduce usage by setting air-conditioners between 24°C and 26°C and using timer functions.

TNB said customers could consider the Time-of-Use (TOU) scheme and shift high-consumption activities to off-peak periods, which run from 10pm to 2pm the following day from Monday to Friday, as well as throughout Saturdays, Sundays and selected public holidays.

The temporary expansion of the protection threshold is intended to cushion households that have recently moved into the 601kWh-to-800kWh consumption range from additional electricity bill charges, while giving consumers until year-end to manage their energy usage under the revised framework.
