Malaysia and Vietnam will push ahead with cooperation in sustainable energy and the halal economy as the two countries deepen ties under their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
Newly appointed Malaysian Ambassador to Vietnam Jamal Sharifuddin Johan said these areas would be among the priorities during his tenure, alongside trade and investment, fisheries, tourism and people-to-people exchanges.
Jamal made the commitment after presenting his credentials to Vietnamese President To Lam at the Presidential Palace in Hanoi on Oct 3, formally assuming his duties as Malaysia’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Vietnam.
The embassy said cooperation in sustainable energy would include efforts under the ASEAN Power Grid, while the halal economy would remain another area of mutual interest.
To Lam welcomed the progress in bilateral relations and expressed the Vietnamese government’s support for the ambassador in advancing cooperation between the two countries.
Malaysia and Vietnam established diplomatic relations in 1973, with bilateral ties elevated to a Strategic Partnership in 2015 and a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2024.
Bilateral trade reached US$22 billion (RM92 billion) last year, making Vietnam one of Malaysia’s key trading partners in the region.
The two countries have also signed agreements and memoranda covering investment, science and technology, information and communications technology, education, defence, agriculture, tourism and employment.
