Avengers: Endgame has reclaimed the title of the highest-grossing movie of all time, overtaking Avatar at the global box office more than seven years after its original release.
The Marvel film now stands at US$2.9255 billion worldwide, edging past Avatar at US$2.9237 billion. The latest shift comes after the release of Avengers: Endgame Encore, which returned to cinemas ahead of Avengers: Doomsday.
According to Deadline, Endgame first took the global box office record from James Cameron’s Avatar in 2019. Cameron’s film later regained the top spot after a series of theatrical re-releases.
The latest re-release has added US$126 million to Endgame’s worldwide total. Of that figure, US$36.2 million came from North America and US$89.8 million from international markets.
Endgame Encore opened to US$26.1 million domestically last weekend but fell 81% in its second weekend, taking US$4.4 million. Its current North American total is US$36.2 million.
Internationally, the re-release has earned US$89.8 million. It was the top non-local film in China, Indonesia, Vietnam, Ecuador and Bolivia. It has also posted strong results across Latin America, including Mexico, Brazil, Colombia and Peru.
The re-release has now pushed Endgame’s domestic lifetime total to US$894.6 million. That puts it third on the all-time US box office chart, behind Spider-Man: Brand New Day at US$954.4 million and Star Wars: The Force Awakens at US$936.6 million.
Outside North America, Endgame has a lifetime total of US$2.03 billion, making it the second-highest international grosser on the all-time MPA box office list.
The timing of the re-release also sets up Marvel’s next major theatrical event. Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled for December 18 and will face Dune: Part Three, setting up a major box office clash before the end of the year.
For now, Avengers: Endgame is back at No. 1 worldwide, with a relatively small gap separating it from Avatar.
