Bridgerton Season 5 has a return date window. Netflix has confirmed that the series will be back in 2027, with Francesca Stirling and Michaela Stirling at the centre of the story.
Hannah Dodd and Masali Baduza will lead the new season as Francesca and Michaela. Production is already underway outside London.
Netflix chief content officer Bela Bajaria confirmed the 2027 release during the company’s upfronts presentation. The announcement comes as filming continues on the next chapter of the period drama.
Season 5 picks up two years after the death of Lord John Stirling. John was Francesca’s husband and Michaela’s cousin. His death left both women grieving, but the new season will shift their story towards a new relationship.
Francesca is now widowed and plans to return to the marriage market for practical reasons. Michaela returns to London to deal with the Kilmartin estate. Their reunion changes Francesca’s plans and sets up the season’s central romance.
The storyline also marks a first for Bridgerton. Season 5 will centre on a same-gender relationship between two women.
Showrunner Jess Brownell has said the season will focus on queer love and joy rather than making trauma the main storyline. The plot is inspired by Julia Quinn’s novel When He Was Wicked, though the television series has changed the central romance.
John’s death will remain part of the story. Francesca continues to deal with the loss of her marriage and the future she had expected. Michaela is also processing the death of a cousin who was one of the closest people in her life.
Francesca’s storyline around infertility will also continue. The subject was introduced in Season 4 and will remain part of her relationship with Michaela.
Dodd and Baduza will be joined by returning members of the Bridgerton cast, along with new additions Tega Alexander, Jacqueline Boatswain and Gemma Knight Jones.
The new season follows Season 4, which ended with Benedict Bridgerton marrying Sophie. Anthony and Kate welcomed their son, while Colin and Penelope settled into life as parents. Francesca’s story took a different turn after John’s death.
Netflix has also confirmed Bridgerton Season 6. No storyline or release date has been announced for the sixth season.
The Season 5 announcement also comes as Shonda Rhimes extends her partnership with Netflix. Rhimes, Shondaland and longtime producing partner Betsy Beers will continue developing television, film, gaming and other projects with the streamer.
