Southwest Monsoon Ends Oct 9 As Transition Phase Begins

Malaysia will enter the monsoon transition phase on Oct 9, with the period expected to continue until the end of October, marking the end of the Southwest Monsoon that began on May 14, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia) said.

During the transition, weak winds from various directions are expected to create conditions favourable for the formation of thunderstorms. These could bring heavy rain, lightning and strong winds over short periods, particularly in the afternoons and early evenings.

The weather is expected to be more pronounced over western and interior parts of Peninsular Malaysia, as well as western Sabah and Sarawak. METMalaysia warned that the storms could result in flash floods, water surges, fallen trees and damage to weak structures.

Meanwhile, the end of the Southwest Monsoon is expected to bring a gradual reduction in the effects of transboundary haze from neighbouring countries, as changing wind patterns help disperse the haze.

METMalaysia urged the public to remain alert during the transition and to keep updated on weather forecasts and warnings through its official website, the myCuaca mobile app and its official social media channels.
