Digi Edges Over Maxis In Latest OOKLA Speed Test Report

  • The latest speed test score from OOKLA, shows an improvement on overall bandwidth speeds across the country this is due to governmnet intervention in having the telecommunication players to up their coverage and conneciity speeds both urban and rural areas.
  • Malaysia’s fixed broadband performance at the country level to other major markets in Southeast Asia during tail end of last year showed the country being in third position in Southeast Asia with Singapore ranked first. With project JENDELA and 5G rollout set to take place in the final quarter for 2021, OOKLA’s latest report shows the telco’s have been hard at work to keep up with the national agenda and fulfill the vision in connecting every person with a decent internet speed.

Among the telco’s that have shown improvement in Quarter 3 2021 is TIME for its performance in the fixed broadband category, based on OOKLA’s Speedtest Intelligence report, it was revealed that the operator had the fastest fixed broadband service in the country, earning a commendable Speed Score of 120.10. It has also achieved the highest Consistency Score for fixed broadband at 87.6%.

As for mobile service surprisingly Digi edged out Maxis for being the fastest mobile operator in Malaysia, earning a Speed Score of 33.19 to Maxis’ 31.94. This was most unexpected as Maxis has been aggressive in its claim for having the best infrastructure in the country. Digi is subject to a merger with Celcom and eventually becoming the largest telecommunication entity in Malaysia has been relatively quiet in its campaigns. In terms of subscription, Digi has a higher prepaid users base compared to Maxis and should be theoretically be having a more congested pipeline.

Separately, U Mobile pipped Celcom to third place in the test results with 30.92 against 28.14, however as for latency Celcom performed the best among the lot with 29 seconds while Maxis held the runner-up position with 31 seconds. Among Malaysia’s most populous cities, Petaling Jaya had the fastest mean fixed broadband speed during Q3 2021, achieving a 129.74 Mbps download and an 89.11 Mbps upload. Nusajaya had the fastest mean mobile download speed at 38.08 Mbps followed by Ipoh at 33.26 Mbps and Malacca coming in at 31.83Mbps.

Speed Score is measured on each provider’s download and upload speed to rank network performance (90% of the final Speed Score is attributed to download speed and the remaining 10% to upload speed because online experiences are typically more affected by download speed). Speed Score uses a modified trimean to combine speeds from the 10th percentile, 50th percentile (also known as the median), and 90th percentile in a weighted average using a 1:8:1 ratio, respectively.
