KPDN Offers Exemption From Trademark PCA Fee To Protect Entrepreneur IP

The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) through the Malaysian Intellectual Property Corporation (MyIPO) is offering a fee waiver for the Preliminary Opinion and Search Service (PCA) for trademarks within a month until next May 23 subject to terms and conditions.

Its minister Datuk Armizan Ali said the decision was made to encourage more trademark registrations and give more entrepreneurs the opportunity to protect their intellectual property rights.

Therefore, he said, MyIPO has received as many as 61,600 intellectual property applications compared to 59,699 in the same period in 2022.

“Of that number, 21,490 applications were local intellectual property applications with an increase of 7.8% compared to the previous year.

“To that end, MyIPO will continue to intensify efforts to increase local filings towards increasing the creativity and exploitation of the country’s intellectual property,” he said in a statement in conjunction with National Intellectual Property Day (HHIN), today.

He explained that this year’s HHIN celebration emphasized the importance of protecting intellectual property as the basis for the development of a cultured and innovative country.

“This recognition is given to the best creators and designers as well as organizations that play a role in the field of intellectual property,” he said.

He added that to recognise the best creative designers, the National Intellectual Property Awards are held through individual competitions, private companies and government bodies, educational institutions and multinational companies.

“In addition, the Green Technology Award, the Sustainable Work Award, the Millennium Award, and the Permata Award also give recognition to intellectual property.

“Through this recognition, MyIPO hopes to encourage local creators and designers to continue to produce meaningful innovations for the progress of the country,” he added.

For the record, Malaysia is the only country in Asia that has been mandated to succeed in the Empowering Youth (K-12) to Innovate for a Better Future project which carries the mission of empowering Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education.

This project is also seen as a platform for the young generation to face national and global issues through intellectual property as an instrument to promote innovation.
