Port Klang Achieves Record Container Handling

With movement of cargo increase due to pent up demand, Port Klang is expected to record a container handling of 13.8 million twenty -foot equivalent units (TEUs) by the end of this year.

This will be a massive haul for the port, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Ir Wee Ka Siong said the port has already achieved over 12.69 million TEUs and its not even end of the year yet, with ships coming in everyday the handling will easily be a rew record. 

As soon as lockdown measures were lifted, ports started seeing increased in arrival and cargo handling, the phenomena is not just in Malaysia but across the globe with some ports even facing warehousing issues. Port Klang had reached 13.6million TEUs in 2020 despite Covid-19 but this year the numbers will be much higher. 

The statement came after the Minister met with Selangor state members for the ECRL Section C (Northern Line) Document Submission Ceremony between MRL and China Communications Construction Company Ltd (CCCC), where Selangor will now be part of.

Port Klang which has to compete with Norhtport and Westport has been tasked to further expand and compete with regional peers such as Singapore which had expanded its port to accommodate a capacity of 65 million TEUs a year.

Every year, Port Klang adds 1.5 million TEUs to accommodate the increase in container capacity, but even then its not eanoigh,]hence the proposal by the Ministry to make Carey Island a maritime center by placing a third port there.

Currently, indepth study is being undertaken to build a third port in Carey Island, the expected documents is expected to be submitted to the Ministry in Q1 2022.
