The Pernas Roadmap To Franchise

If you are looking to invest in a new business, perhaps franchising may just be your cup of tea. Fortunately for potential franchisees, franchisors and entrepreneurs looking to delve into the franchise business model, Perbadanan Nasional Berhad (Pernas), an investment holding company owned by the Minister of Finance Incorporated (MOF Inc.) and agency under MEDAC, has the facilities and expertise to support this endeavour. 

Since 2004, with the mandate to lead the development of Malaysia’s franchise industry, Pernas has been working to increase the number of entrepreneurs especially in franchise businesses to boost the economy.   Via its speciality of providing quality training services, products and networks in not only the franchise industry but also related to real estate management and SME development, one of its main objectives is to develop local products and market them abroad.

On 1 July 2009, Pernas established a training centre called the Franchise Institute (formerly known as PNS Academy), to provide training and consultancy services in all aspects of franchising and beyond.   

Established and aspiring entrepreneurs are encouraged to look for opportunity to grow professionally at the Franchise Institute which aims to enhance the human capital, specifically in knowledge and skills through various training and programs, especially for franchise community, entrepreneurs, potential businessman and public who want to excel in business particularly in franchising industry.  

For the new and potential franchisees or entrepreneurs to understand the fundamentals of franchising, they can attend the foundation module called ‘Roadmap to Franchise’. This module is designed to give a big picture overview of the franchising business and demonstrate the potential of adopting this business model by providing real-life franchisor and franchisee stories using actual case studies.

The certified courses that are conducted by experienced and certified trainers effectively guide and support program participants in developing a deeper understanding of the franchising industry at all levels of the franchise business. 

The Franchise Institute also targets training needs for staff development and talent enhancements for potential companies on the franchise journey, while also providing advisory services and integrated business solutions.

Aligning its training offerings together with Pernas rebranding initiative that sees the strengthening of Pernas position as Malaysia’s franchise champion, Franchise Institute will resume its role as training expert that continues to nurture and guide potential franchise entrepreneurs to grow their businesses. In addition, the training is created based on strategies and objectives in developing SME entrepreneurs towards more affordable franchises, to create more entrepreneurs that can venture into the franchise business and reflect on Pernas role in the franchise industry.

To ensure successful, productive, and effective training, program designers and facilitators at the Franchise Institute provide opportunities for further training and growth through methodologies that are customised to suit participants’ needs to better absorb and retain relevant information needed, and in the format best suited for it. The training methods applied by Pernas are implemented in the form of roleplays, case studies, coaching/ mentoring, multimedia usage, lectures and more. Training programmes are modular and structured to provide a real-life application for adult learners.

The pandemic has provided fresh challenges for Franchise Institute, and it had to embark on digital platform to conduct trainings while continue to fulfil its role in nurturing and facilitating professional and business growth. With training programmes being conducted using digital platforms, new classes have emerged as they expanded into online webinar series via Pernas Connect Live.  

Pernas also provides supplemental knowledge in the form of experiential training by encouraging participation in relevant and valuable industry related events such as the International Franchise and  Entrepreneurship Conference (IFEC), Blueprint Workshop, Entrepreneurship Development Programs such as “Program Pendaya Keupayaaan Keusahawanan” (PPKK), 1 Malaysia Micro-Entrepreneurs (1MME), “Program Transformasi Minda” (PTM) and others.
