TNB And Malaysian Nature Society Act To Rehabilitate Mangrove Swamps

Tenaga Nasional Berhad together with the Malaysian Nature Society is taking steps to protect and rehabilitate the mangrove swamps in the country environment especially by using the land around power stations into the green ecosystem for habitats to thrive.

TNB Genco which is spearheading the initiative has thus far replanted a total of 19,800 mangrove saplings through the mangrove forest rehabilitation program in Pasir Panjang, Kinta, Perak; Kampung Sungai Tiram, and Kampung Sungai Limau in Manjung, Perak since 2013. The locations are within the neighborhood of Sultan Azlan Shah Power Station, Manjung. This will be part of the 23,700 mangrove seedlings committed by TNB being planted in the states in the Peninsular. Apart from Perak, TNB has also planted mangroves along the coast in Perlis, Penang, Selangor and Negeri Sembilan.

Among then project included are four firefly habitat locations conserved in Kampung Kuantan in Kuala Selangor, Selangor; Dew Village in Taiping, Perak; Kampung Sungai Timun in Rembau, Negeri Sembilan and Kampung Yak Yah in Kemaman, Terengganu. From January to December 2021, TNB Genco in collaboration with the Malaysian Nature Society has planted 1,167 mangrove saplings along the shores of Tuanku Muhriz Power Station, Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan despite facing the challenge of the Covid-19 Pandemic.

This ongoing initiative is in line with the power supplier’s commitment to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) issues, in efforts to increase the diversity of flora and fauna species as well as providing new habitats for wildlife and preventing coastal erosion in the long run.

It is also expected to benefit the local community in terms of new economic development through eco-tourism activities while enriching the resources of marine life, thus potentially helping the income of fishermen.
