Tengku Zafrul Rebuts Allegation of Unpaid 1MDB Debt

Tengku Zafrul Minister of Finance

Finance Minister Tengku Zafrul refuted the allegation that the principal debt of 1MDB has not been paid until now, calling it as baseless as it will only mature between 2022 and 2039.

1MDB’s total debt was about RM38.8 billion, comprising of RM32.3 billion in principal sum and RM6.5 billion in interest as at end of February 2022, according to the Finance Minister.

“We have started paying the interest on 1MDB’s debt of about RM6.5 billion and have not paid the principal because the principal of the debt will mature later,” he answered during the Parliamentary ministerial question and answer session.

Tengku Zafrul answered this in response to an additional question from Bagan MP Lim Guan Eng, as the later wanted an explanation on the allegation by Pekan MP Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak that the government has not paid 1MDB’s debt.

The first tranche of payments will commence on 11 May 2022 for bonds issued under 1MDB Energy Limited and the 1MDB Energy worth RM7.3 billion.
