If No Takers Post June Deadline, DNB Will Rollout 5G With 2 Telcos

According to the Communication and Multimedia Minister, only two telecommunication companies have signed the 5G agreement namely Telekom Malaysia Bhd and YTL Communications Sdn Bhd.

With this, the parties will now own an equity stake in Digital Nasional Bhd for the implementation of the 5G network in the country, so far. To note, these were also the same operators who signed an agreement prior to the ownership proposal.

The Minister is hopeful that other telcos will expedite to finalise an agreement with DNB before the June 30 closing date, Celcom, Digi, and Maxis have yet to finalise with DNB.

However, the Minister stated that if the other telcos don’t take up the deal before the deadline, the Government will proceed with the 2 telcos and the other parties could possibly be left out.

TM and YTL could be deploying 5G service after Hari Raya Aidilfitri in three areas (Phase 1A), Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, and Cyberjaya. On March 16, Annuar said that the issue of DNB monopoly in the implementation of the 5G network in the country did not arise anymore as the government will offer up to 70 percent of the equity stake to all telcos.
