Malaysia’s Wholesale & Retail Trade Recorded RM129.8 Billion In May, Highest Sales Since 2013

Sales value of Wholesale & Retail Trade recorded RM129.8 billion in May 2022, registered a growth of 19.9 per cent year-on-year, the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) said

 It said that the positive growth was contributed by all sub-sectors, namely Retail Trade 29.9 per cent, Motor Vehicles 20.1 per cent and Wholesale Trade 11.7 per cent. In terms of volume index, Wholesale & Retail Trade registered a growth of 14.7 per cent year-on-year to record 141.8 points.

DOSM said that the increment was supported by the increase of Retail Trade 24.2 per cent, Motor Vehicles 21.5 per cent and Wholesale Trade 3.1 per cent. As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it went down 0.7 per cent month-on-month in May 2022.

On Wholesale Trade, DOSM  said that it generated sales value of RM59.6 billion in May 2022 with a growth of 11.7 per cent as against May 2021. This increase was attributed to Wholesale of Household goods 22.1 per cent, Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals 17.7 per cent, and Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis 12.0 per cent as compared to the previous year. For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector rose 0.9 per cent.

On the volume index of Wholesale Trade, it said that it registered 130.4 points, and expanded 3.1 per cent year-on-year.

It said that the positive growth was recorded in Wholesale of Household Goods (18.5%), Wholesale of Machinery, Equipment & Supplies (7.2%), and Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals (5.8%). Meanwhile, the seasonally adjusted volume index decreased 2.6 per cent month-on-month.

On Sales of Retail Trade , it said that registered a growth of 29.9 per cent as compared to May 2021. Among the groups that contributed to this expansion were Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (54.6%), Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (36.3%), and Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (30.8%). Compared with April 2022, sales of this sub-sector went up 5.1 per cent.

Volume Index of Retail Trade recorded a growth of 24.2 per cent to 164.1 points as compared to May 2021. Among the groups that contributed to this growth were Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (56.4%), Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (32.1%), Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (28.9%), and Retail Trade Not in Stores, Stalls or Markets (25.4%). As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it rose 4.5 per cent as against April 2022.

On the Sales value of Motor Vehicles sub-sector, it said that it registered a positive growth of 20.1 per cent year-on-year.

It said that the increase was attributed to the Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles 37.4 per cent, Sale of Motor Vehicles Parts & Accessories 34.3 per cent, and Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles 23.2 per cent in May 2022.
