SEDA Malaysia And KeTSA Brings The Largest Sustainable Energy Summit To New Heights

The renewable energy (RE) industry remains resilient despite the recent challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

As the world looks to make the planet more livable for the future generations, it is heartening to see new strides being made with newfound opportunities and heightened awareness in this critical industry.

Tasked to advance the nation towards adopting sustainable energy measures, the Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) Malaysia, since its inception in 2011, has overcome many challenges and obtained many achievements in shaping the country’s sustainable energy growth.

In this light, SEDA Malaysia will be organising its 5th International Sustainable Energy Summit (ISES) 2022 in collaboration with the Energy and Natural Resources Ministry (KeTSA) from Aug 29-30 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC).

ISES 2022 is mooted in partial of Strategic Thrust 5 of the National Renewable Energy Policy and Action Plan (NREPAP), which encompasses promotional and awareness building on sustainable energy. ISES 2022 brings together experts and thought leaders to discuss the issues related to sustainable energy as well as to address topical matters of interest.

Prime Minister YAB Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob will be officiating this year’s landmark summit.

Aligned with the recently launched Malaysia Renewable Energy Roadmap (MyRER), the summit will witness intellectual and strategic discussions on actions and interventions towards achieving the Government’s RE target of 31% by 2025 and 40% by 2035 in the national installed capacity mix.

With the theme ‘Empowering Energy Transition’, the summit will highlight key pillars from MyRER and discuss the future of energy.

There will be four plenary sessions and 10 deep-dive workshop throughout the two-day summit whereby various perspectives of technology, business models, financing, government policies and will include topics such as exploring digital innovation in the electricity system and fostering urban development of low carbon cities in the energy transition.

SEDA Malaysia envisions ISES 2022 as a platform to exchange views, experiences and aspirations of the new norms in the journey of energy transition. It will also address economic recovery strategies necessary for such transition.

This year’s event will also see a bigger exhibition setup with large-scale exhibitions by leading RE partners, enhanced with technology showcases, trade programmes and business networking sessions all rolled into one event. ISES 2022 expects a strong turnout of 4,500 visitors over the two-day summit. The event will explore two key elements – sharing knowledge via conferences, and on ground activities taking the forms of exhibitions, pocket talks, and others. A line-up of 30 exhibitors and 70 speakers will further drive the sustainability agenda, with strong focus on renewable energy and energy efficiency topics, as well as addressing climate change issues within the country and globally.

Among the key panellists and speakers at ISES 2022 are The World Bank’s Lead Economist for Malaysia Dr Apurva Sanghi. A macro-economist with environmental expertise, and lead author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Apurva will expand on the main theme ‘Empowering Energy Transition.’

Apurva has worked on development topics ranging from infrastructure and climate change to microfinance and agricultural economics before joining the World Bank, under which he led the Economic Growth Cluster of the World Bank in Washington DC. He has also held similar senior posts globally.

Another celebrated speaker is World Bank Senior Infrastructure Finance Specialist Prajakta Chitre who has vast experience on the workings of Infrastructure Finance, PPPs and Guarantees, and in-depth knowledge on the various transactions and structure risk mitigation instruments to mobilise private capital for strategic infrastructure projects in emerging and developing markets.

On the Malaysian front, Bursa Malaysia Berhad’s Chairman Tan Sri Abdul Wahid Omar will Chair the Main Plenary session and share his views on various issues across the ISES 2020’s theme.
