Asian Bourses Closed Mixed; Market Remains Hopeful for Robust Holiday Spending During Golden Week

Kuala Lumpur, Oct 6 (Thursday) – Bursa Malaysia closed marginally lower today. The barometer index FBM KLCI fell 0.12 point or -0.01% to 1,420.43. The KLCI was trending higher in the morning trading session, it then reversed its earlier gains in the afternoon trading session.

Meanwhile, Asian bourses closed mixed today after Wall Street’s two-day rally fizzled and OPEC+ agreed to cut 2 million barrels per day to shore up prices. Regional markets were supported by dip-buying after marking their worst month since the early days of Covid-19 pandemic. Also there is growing expectations of an economic rebound in China, with focus now turning to upcoming U.S. payrolls data to determine the path of monetary policy.

It is reported holiday spending by mainland Chinese consumers remained robust despite COVID-linked headwinds, driving up hopes for a recovery in the world’s second-largest economy this year. According to Reuters’s report, Chinese demand for commodity imports is also expected to increase in the fourth quarter, citing optimistic comments from senior shipping executives.

* Singapore’s Straits Times Index (STI) down 2.06 points or -0.07% to 3,151.17; Hong Kong’s HSI dropped 75.82 points or -0.42% at 18,012.15; Japan’s Nikkei 225 Index rose 190.77 points or +0.70% at 27,311.30; Shanghai Stock Exchange closed for Golden Week holiday; Korea’s Kospi Index up 22.86 points or +1.02% at 2,237.86; Australia S&P/ASX 200 Index up 1.80 points or +0.026% at 6,817.50.
