Asian Bourses: Indices Gained in Jubilant Mood; HSI Soared 4.11%, Hit 2-Month High

Kuala Lumpur, November 15 – Bursa Malaysia extended another losing streak on Tuesday with the bell-weathered index FBM KLCI ceded 13.46 points or -0.92% at 1,464.00. Investors remain cautious ahead of the General Election on this Saturday and choose to take profit at selected heavyweights.

Most of the stock markets in the Asian domain ended in positive territory despite the sell-off in S&P500 on Monday. 

Leading the pack today is Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index (HS) which made another round of roaring gains, soared 4.11%. Shanghai’s SSE Composite Index surged too, by 1.64%. Despite the release of downbeat Retail Sales data and lower-than expected Industrial Production at 5.0% (against the consensus of 5.2%), Chinese equities performed well. HSI hit the 2-month high, buoyed by Tencent and Aibaba, both gained more than 10% today, gaming and gambling stocks also had their best run today. The Chinese markets headed northward as Beijing has announced three main stimulus measures to prop up the economy, especially on the ailing property sector. Also, the friendly meeting between Xi-Biden was seen as a positive sign by investors.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 index ended in capped gains despite a contraction in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) numbers for the third quarter of 2022. The Japanese economy declined by 0.3% in the third quarter vs. expectations of expansion by 0.3%. On an annualized basis, the GDP data has displayed a negative growth rate at 1.2% against an expansion of 1.1% as expected.

** The FTSE BM KLCI opened at 1,461.51. The index fluctuated between 1,447.87 – 1,461.51.

** 332 counters are gainers, 376 counters are unchanged, while 541 counters are decliners.

** Total volume of 2,781,449,580 shares changed hands; while Turnover of RM 1,677,110,538

* Singapore’s Straits Times Index (STI) climbed 11.86 points or +0.36% to 3,272.66; Hong Kong’s HSI skyrocketed 723.41 or +4.11% at 18,343.12; Japan’s Nikkei 225 Index rose 26.70 points or +0.095% at 27,990.17; Shanghai’s SSE Composite Index gained 50.68 points or +1.64% at 3,134.08; Korea’s Kospi Index up 5.68 points or +0.23% at 2,480.33; Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 Index dropped 4.70 points or -0.07% at 7,141.60.
