Asian Bourses Ended Mixed Following Strong US Jobs Data

Kuala Lumpur, December 5 – Bursa Malaysia ended Monday trading day lower, with the FBM KLCI shed 10.24 points or -0.69% at 1,471.56. The main index trended lower due to profit-taking.

Meanwhile, the Asian bourses ended mixed amidst uncertainty over U.S. monetary policy after strong payrolls data.

However Chinese stocks outperformed the regionals as the government has loosened COVID restrictions in more cities. As a result of public discontent with the strict zero-COVID policy, Major cities like Beijing and Shanghai have already relaxed some movement curbs and testing mandates over the weekend.

The best performer amongst the Asian bourses was Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index. It surged 4.51% to 19,518.29. technically, the index is said to be in a bull market after rallying more than 20% from a 13-year low touched in October. Whilst China’s Shanghai Composite Index advanced 1.76% to 3211.81.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 index moved up slightly by 0.15% as the latest economic data showed Japan’s business activity declined substantially in November, exerting more pressure on the economy.

Australia’s ASX 200 index went up marginally by 0.33%, on hopes of improved relationship with China. Australia’s service sector printed decline for a third straight month in November. Whilst gross company profits in the country slumped 12.4% in the third quarter.

** The FTSE BM KLCI opened at 1,482.08. The index fluctuated between 1,470.33– 1,482.08.

** 524 counters are gainers, 392 counters are unchanged, while 486 counters are decliners.

** Total volume of 3.986 billion shares changed hands; while Turnover of RM 2.071 billion

** The Top 5 Gainers: HSI-CLZ (0.84, +0.45); BKAWAN (20.78, +0.38); ALLIANZ-PA (14.00, +0.34); HSI-CLY (0.525, +0.315); COMCORP (0.39, +0.30)

** The Top 5 Losers: NESTLE (137.60, -0.40); KOTRA (5.62, -0.11); HSI-HE1 (0.085, -0.08); MAGNUM (1.29, -0.07); HSI-HKM (0.16, -0.06)

** The Top 5 Active: MQTECH (0.07, +0.015); BORNOIL (0.02, +0.00); DATAPRP (0.275, +0.105); SMTRACK (0.08, +0.015); ASB (0.19, +0.00)

Singapore’s Straits Times Index (STI) rose 13.40 points or +0.41% to 3,272.60; Hong Kong’s HSI soared 842.94 points or +4.51% at 19,518.29; Japan’s Nikkei 225 Index up 42.50 points or +0.15% at 27,820.40; Shanghai’s SSE Composite Index climbed 55.67 points or +1.76% at 3,211.81; Korea’s Kospi Index shed 15.01 points or -0.62% at 2,419.32; Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 Index gained 24.10 points or +0.33% at 7,325.60.
