Kajang City Centre Poised For Makeover On Par With PJ And Jonker Walk

The city center of Kajang which used to be famous for its traditional trading activities will be revived through cultural mapping and tourism promotion to attract more visitors. Local representative Hee Loy Sian says he wants to make the country’s first trading centre with a history of more than 120 years on par with Petaling Street in Kuala Lumpur, Georgetown (Penang) and Jonker Walk Melaka).

Hee further added that back in the 80s, the area was visited by many people, but it gradually became quiet following the migration to the city.”Seeing the importance of preserving tradition, there is a need to rejuvenate the old city center of Kajang in addition to revitalising activities in this area. “We want to organise the heritage of this area which is unrecorded in a system by way of oral history directly from the residents in addition to collecting historical records and pictures,” he said.

Hee who is also the tourism EXCO, said further discussions regarding the intention would be held with the Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) and council members. “One of the methods may be by bringing people to come here first like the celebrating today and also for the moon cake event.

Organising such an event will remind people to return to Kajang. “I am confident that this initiative will be a very good heritage tourism product thus attracting tourists,” he said. It is understood that in the downtown area of Kajang there are around 100 traditional shops located along Jalan Tengah, Jalan Tukang, and Jalan Mendaling.
