MCMC Blocked 6391 Gambling Sites And 212, 399 Phone Lines

In response to calls from consumer associations for the government to keep a tap or stop online gambling platforms, the Malaysia Communications and Multimedia Commission said while PDRM carries out actions and enforcement MCMC plays a role in providing assistance with technical details including the supply of information and restricting gambling websites upon requests by the police.

For the period between 2020 and the end of 2022, MCMC said it had blocked a total of 6,381 online gambling websites, based on applications put forth by the police. Whereas, a total of 212,399 telephone lines including mobile and fixed that send dubious SMS spam like promoting online gambling, unlicensed loans, and others have been terminated from 2020 until 2022.

In addition to enforcement actions, awareness, education, and self-control are the keys to eradicating online gambling the agency added. MCMC has called for the public to play a role and cooperate in efforts to block gambling promotion activities online, including by reporting gambling advertisements received via SMS. If the user receives a gambling advertisement through messaging apps like WhatsApp or social media like Facebook, report the number or social media account to the service provider or social media platform admin so that the number/account online gambling promotion ads cant be sent to other users.
