JENDELA Initiative Receives International Recognition In WSIS Awards 2023

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) announced that the National Digital Interconnection Plan (JENDELA) initiative has been selected as one of the five Project Champions with the highest votes under Category C2 – Information and communication infrastructure: an essential foundation for an inclusive information society, by the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) – WSIS Prizes 2023 organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) recently.

The selection of JENDELA as Project Champion is in conjunction with waiting for the final result of the winner to be announced at the WSIS 2023 Award Ceremony in conjunction with WSIS Forum 2023 at ITU UN, Geneva, Switzerland on 14 March 2023.

This success is a great recognition for MCMC who have worked hard to realize the JENDELA initiative which aspires to provide connectivity coverage and the provision of quality Internet services for Malaysians. The MCMC would also like to express its appreciation to everyone who voted and gave full support to this initiative.

JENDELA that includes two phases has been developed to continuously improve connectivity coverage and the provision of quality Internet services for the benefit of the people, the business sector and also stakeholders. By the end of 2025, JENDELA aspires to expand Gigabit access for fixed line broadband to nine million premises, 100% of populated areas have Internet coverage and reach an average mobile broadband speed of 100Mbps.

JENDELA Phase 1 (2020-2022) aims to expand Gigabit access for fixed line broadband to 7.5 million premises, increase 4G mobile broadband coverage to 96.9% in populated areas, increase average mobile broadband speed to 35Mbps.

Meanwhile, JENDELA Phase 2 (2023-2025) focuses on providing Internet coverage for the remaining three percent (3%) of the populated area, expanding Gigabit access for fixed line broadband to nine (9) million premises.

This recognition is proof of the commitment of the Government and MCMC to continue to strengthen connectivity and strengthen the digital ecosystem so that the people and the country will always be ready to face the current economic challenges as a whole.

The WSIS Prizes is a unique international competition, developed to evaluate and recognize outstanding projects in implementing development-oriented strategies that utilize ICT as a catalyst for development. The WSIS Prizes are also a platform to identify and showcase success stories and role models, to appreciate the efforts of stakeholders for their commitment and added value to society towards achieving the goals of WSIS.
