Govt Implements SKSPS, Social Security Mechanism Inclusive Of Gig Workers

The National Forum: The Gig Industry Career Framework held on 17 July 2023 is a positive step in bringing together gig activists and platform providers to discuss mutual responsibilities in looking after the welfare of both parties.

According to the Ministry Of Human Resource, the gig industry has huge potential and needs attention and support. Therefore, gig workers need to be given appropriate social support. Through Act 789, the government has implemented a social security mechanism inclusive of gig workers, by launching the Skim Keselamatan Sosial Pekerjaan Sendiri (SKSPS) through PERKESO.

This is an important step in providing social protection to workers from the informal sector, including gig workers. In addition, the ministry is drafting a specific guideline for gig operators (p-hailing) and platform provider companies that includes six (6) main elements which are income, social protection, awareness on aspects of occupational safety and health, freedom of work, speech and negotiation, training and guidance for career advancement and turnover mechanisms.

The government is confident that the efforts made will create social justice, harmony, and strengthen the growth of the gig industry to stimulate the national economy.
