Singapore Presidential Election, Tharman Leads By 70% Based On Sample Count

Presidential candidate Tharman Shanmugaratnam is in the lead with 70 percent of the vote, according to a sample count published by the Elections Department at about 10.40pm on Friday (Sep 1).

Mr Ng Kok Song is in second place with 16 percent of valid votes, followed by Mr Tan Kin Lian with 14 percent. 

The sample count gives an early indication of the election outcome, but the final result could differ as vote counting is underway.

Tharman “humbled” by “strong endorsement” After the Elections Department announced that Mr Tharman had received 70 per cent of valid votes, according to a sample count, the former Senior Minister said he is “truly humbled by the strong endorsement” Singaporeans have given him.

Speaking at Taman Jurong Food Centre where his supporters have gathered, Mr Tharman also thanked the other candidates for contesting with “full effort” and for making it a “worthy contest”.
