Malaysia Calls For Reform Of UN To Maintain Effectiveness

Malaysia renewed its commitment to the United Nations (UN) in conjunction with its 78th anniversary on Tuesday (Oct 24), but stressed that reforms are needed to ensure the world body remains fit for purpose.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement said Malaysia will continue to be a strong and reliable global partner, in line with the universal values enshrined in the UN Charter, in line with the principles contained in CIVIL Malaysia which are necessary to create and advance a society that harmony

“Malaysia continues to believe that the various challenges facing the world today can only be addressed through closer cooperation and with a strengthened multilateralism system.

“Therefore, reform is necessary to ensure that the UN remains fit for purpose,” according to the statement.

UN Day is celebrated on 24 October every year to mark the date of entry into force of the UN Charter and the establishment of the international body in 1945.

Since joining the UN after achieving independence in 1957, Malaysia has consistently promoted the three pillars of the UN system, namely peace and security, human rights and development.
