Coca-Cola Introduces 100% Recycled Plastic PET Bottles For The First Time In Malaysia

Coca-Cola system in Malaysia has introduced Coca-Cola® Original Taste and Coca-Cola® Zero Sugar 500ml bottles made entirely from 100% recycled plastic bottles, excluding caps and labels.

This marks a crucial step in embracing circularity in plastic packaging and aligns with Coca-Cola’s global commitment to incorporate at least 50% recycled content in its packaging by 2030.

Coca-Cola has successfully implemented this initiative in over 40 countries globally, and Malaysia joins the ranks of nations including Indonesia, Myanmar, Vietnam, Thailand, and Singapore where consumers can now enjoy their favorite beverages in environmentally friendly packaging.

The 100% recycled PET plastic bottles meet The Coca-Cola Company’s rigorous global standards for food-grade packaging. They are also Halal-Certified by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM), ensuring they adhere to Islamic dietary laws.

Sustainability & Partnerships Director, ASEAN & South Pacific, The Coca-Cola Company, Kirsten van Zandwijk, emphasised the importance of collaborative efforts to address Malaysia’s plastic waste challenge.

She said, “In line with our commitment to building a circular economy in the country, we are introducing innovative packaging designs like our new 100% recycled plastic bottles. These bottles align with our brand philosophy of ‘Dari Botol Jadi Botol,’ emphasising that every bottle has a second life.”

The initiative extends beyond introducing eco-friendly packaging, as Coca-Cola is actively engaged in expanding collection and recycling programs.

The company is fostering industry partnerships and encouraging Malaysian consumers to participate in recycling initiatives, promoting the concept that every bottle can contribute to a sustainable future.

Gahani, said, “Our goal is to continue utilising recycled materials, contributing significantly to Malaysia’s environmental objectives. By actively engaging in sustainable practices and promoting the circular economy, we strive to make enduring contributions towards a more sustainable future,”.

The 100% recycled plastic bottles are locally processed and manufactured in the Coca-Cola bottling plant at Bandar Enstek, Negeri Sembilan, symbolising their Malaysian origin.

This commitment underscores Coca-Cola’s dedication to sustainability, with the bottles proudly carrying the slogan “Dari Botol Jadi Botol,” signifying the transformative journey each bottle takes.
