“Buddha Passion” By MGM Theatre Mesmerises Macau In A Symphony Of Culture And Technology

The MGM Theatre in Macau witnessed a spectacular convergence of art and technology as the symphonic masterpiece “Buddha Passion,” presented jointly by MGM and world-renowned musician Tan Dun, concluded with resounding success on January 2, 2024.

This cultural extravaganza not only paid homage to significant milestones—the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 25th anniversary of Macao’s return to the Motherland—but also marked an unparalleled artistic breakthrough.

Empowered by the immersive capabilities of the MGM Theater’s 28 million pixels LED screen, “Buddha Passion” achieved a groundbreaking fusion of music and technology, bringing to life the grandeur of Dunhuang’s mural stories digitally.

Composed and scripted by Tan Dun, the symphony portrayed the tales of Dunhuang, including the reclining Buddha’s Nirvana, Flying Apsara Dance, and the Deer of Nine Colors.

The two-day performance marked the maiden appearance of “Buddha Passion” in Macau, featuring Tan Dun as the conductor. The show, blending ancient dances and instruments, aimed to illuminate Macau as the “City of Performing Arts.” Tan Dun, known as one of the “Top 10 Important Musicians on the World’s Music Scene,” expressed his joy at harmonising the sounds of Dunhuang with the diverse cultural backdrop of Macau.

MGM China Holdings Limited Chairperson & Executive Director Pansy Ho, highlighted the significance of the collaboration, stating that it marks a spectacular beginning for Macau in the new year.

The show’s distinctive features and world-class standards, combined with innovative use of technology, underscored Macau’s leading role as the ‘City of Performing Arts.’

“Buddha Passion” comprised an extraordinary musical lineup, featuring Tan Dun as the conductor, various Dunhuang ancient instrument performers, and international vocalists. The performance, a touching journey through Dunhuang murals, attracted leaders and dignitaries from both Macau and China. The six-act composition drew enthusiastic cheers and applause from the audience, providing a harmonious fusion of Chinese and Western Opera.

Maestro Tan Dun dedicated over six years to create this musical masterpiece, inspired by the Dunhuang Mogao Cave murals. The show’s global recognition lies in its diverse styles, incorporating singers, choir, orchestra, indigenous throat singing, Tibetan indigenous soprano, Dunhuang music, dance, and multimedia elements. “Buddha Passion” truly embodied the all-encompassing characteristic of the Silk Road culture, manifesting the magnificent vision of arts and culture.

The collaboration between MGM and Tan Dun not only celebrated cultural milestones but also positioned Macau at the forefront of artistic innovation, creating an unforgettable experience for audiences and reinforcing Macau’s status as a cultural hub.
